Veteran-Cycle Club Cycling History No.2
Charlie Chadwick Vol.1 – Rough Stuff
edited by David Warner.
Synopsis:
Pre-war cycle touring diaries from around the UK. 163 pages.
Charlie Chadwick was an amazing man. Born in Bolton in 1904, he joined the CTC in his late ‘teens, and started to record and illustrate his travels. His writing is of a very high standard and his illustrations are in the style of Patterson. His early years were spent with an elite group of like minded souls, nicknamed the “We are 7”, to a man all hard riders. Every ride was an endurance test, especially with the equipment in those times. With his love of the high and lonely places, his knowledge of the byways and remote tracks, and his photography, it is little wonder that he was a founder member of the Rough Stuff Fellowship and indeed their first Chairman. RSF members still compete annually for the Charlie Chadwick Memorial Trophy photographic competition.
This book is only possible thanks to the foresight of David Warner who after Charlie’s death ensured the series of diaries were preserved and published.
The Committee felt that there is a place for monographs on other aspects of cycle history, than cycle marques, and in a similar A5 format. Studies such as the diaries of Charlie Chadwick fall nicely into this category. This publication then is the second of a new Cycling History series, which follows a similar style to the Marque Albums, and the first Charlie Chadwick volume.
