V-CC Cycling History No. 9

The Good Friday Gamble

by John Watts.

Synopsis:

A history of the Herne Hill Easter track meeting from its inception in 1903 to the final event in 2017. 95 pages.

Many will remember devouring the reports of the Good Friday Meeting at Herne Hill in the Cycling and International Cycle Sport magazines. Indeed, such was the stature of the event and its competitors, that the reports frequently eclipsed and took prominence over what was always a very busy weekend of Easter racing in the various disciplines of cycle sport.

The decision by the SCCU following the meeting in 2017 to discontinue its promotion made it an appropriate time to bring this account up to date and to its conclusion. The history of the Good Friday Meeting encapsulates the history of track racing in the UK up to the present day. The influence of the wider social and economic conditions on the meeting, together with the public perception of cycling recorded in the following pages will be of interest to all concerned with cycling history.
