The Origins of the Bicycle
by Andrew Ritchie, accomplished author of the seminal work “King of the Road”.
Synopsis:
Published by the John Pinkerton Memorial Publishing Fund in 2009
A history of the earliest bicycles up to the end of the 19th century. This book is highly researched.
Until now all the relevant original documentation (mostly from the 19th century) concerning the various claims for “priority”, including that concerning Macmillan and Dalzell and the research undertaken and published by James Johnston, has been hard to locate and has not been collected together – hence the justification for assembling the source documents included in the second part of this book, and analysed in the first part. Andrew Ritchie felt that having all the available source documents easily accessible allows a fresh historical perspective on this subject.
