This is a substantial book covering hub gears from Sturmey-Archer, Fichtel & Sachs, Shimano, others such as the Rohloff Speedhub, B.S.A. 3-speed, Pedersen 3-speed, Bendix 2-speeds, and hybrid gears.
There is a survey of hub gear ratios which covers the majority of hub gears produced since 1900. The analyses are supported by photographs and drawings. Some of the gears featured have not been available for many years, but their design is part of an evolving background which has led to the most recent designs. Several gears involved very imaginative concepts. There are comprehensive tables on the whole range of hub gears.
