Veteran-Cycle Club Cycling History No.2 – Charlie Chadwick Vol 6

Charlie’s Journey’s End

edited by David Warner.

This final volume of Charlie Chadwick’s writings and drawings easily maintains the standard of the previous volumes. The list of routes is essentially a guide to the best rough tracks in Lancashire and the West Riding of Yorkshire plus a few in Derbyshire. The descriptions are accurate and detailed although with the passage of time there have of course been some changes. They complement the use of an OS Map. Anyone wanting to explore the best tracks in Northern England is advised to use this list as a guide.

Also in this volume we have a series of line drawings of a very high standard. Some like the one entitled Reverie are almost direct copies of Frank Patterson sketches. Others show how he developed a more individual style. There is also a collection of tickets which makes you realise just how many locations charged an entry fee. Finally there is a section on the Wayfarer Memorial in the Berwyns in North Wales. Erected by the Rough Stuff Fellowship in 1957 to commemorate the cycling journalist W. M. Robinson who is regarded as the spiritual father of that organisation.

This series is only possible thanks to the foresight of David Warner who after Charlie’s death ensured the series of diaries were preserved and published. We owe David Warner a huge debt of gratitude for rescuing this valuable and fascinating material and giving us an insight into the prewar days of a cyclist. David unfortunately died on February 5th 2024 just before this book went to print. He was very happy that all the Charlie Chadwick material had been published as are his family.

The Committee felt that there is a place for monographs on other aspects of cycle history, than cycle marques, and in a similar A5 format. Studies such as the diaries of Charlie Chadwick fall nicely into this category. This publication then is the second of our Cycling History series, which follows a similar style to the Marque Albums, and the sixth and final Charlie Chadwick volume. We are proud to have published them all.
